Misty Laker is a character role-played by bagelEm.

Backstory[]

Misty was raised in the sleepy village of Great Lissenden, located in the South East of England. Misty was raised by Joanna and Eric Laker and lived with them and her older sister Marina for all of her adolescence. Her father was absent for much of Misty’s childhood, taking many ‘business trips’ overseas. To this day, Misty still doesn’t know what her father does for a living.

Misty always had a soft spot for her older sister despite their age difference of seven years. Misty and Marina were close, in fact for a long time Misty would say that Marina was her best friend. Marina was not without her own mysteries. Misty knew that her older sister was rebellious, that much was obvious by how much Marina argued with their mother. Misty would ask her sister why they fought so much but Marina would brush these questions off. Still, Misty adored Marina and without many kids her own age in the village Misty spent most of her time playing with Marina. Their mother always seemed slightly agitated by the girl's closeness, especially as Marina grew more and more rebellious. Misty had always been an angel, according to her mother, and she feared that Marina’s rebellious nature would rub off on Misty.

When it came time for Misty to start school, her parents opted for home-schooling, something that they hadn’t done for Marina. Misty didn’t mind at first but as she grew older she found herself longing for more. Age nine Misty begged her mother to send her to a real school, but she was denied. As she grew older Misty always felt like something was missing, sure she had her sister but Marina had her own life, own friends and Misty had none of that.

Around when Misty was thirteen, her sister began dating Joey. Joey worked for Misty’s father. Things in the Laker family started to deteriorate from there. Her mother was deeply unhappy that Marina was dating Joey. Misty never figured out why. Arguments between her mother and Marina were constant. Marina started spending less and less time at home. The autumn Misty turned fourteen marked one of the last times Misty saw her sister in person. Marina gifted Misty a cheap burner phone to contact her with and told her not to tell their parents about it. Two weeks later Marina moved to America with Joey

Without her sister Misty felt more alone than ever and she blamed her parents, especially her Mother for this. At first Misty tried to keep her resentment inside, trying not to cause an argument. That worked for three years, Misty would still speak to Marina from time to time in secret, and would just pretend that nothing was wrong with her parents. This all blew up when her mother found the burner phone and read all the messages between the sisters and decided to destroy the phone. Misty was furious when she found out, with tears balling from her eyes she confronted her mother who was aggravatingly calm about the whole situation. Every argument Misty made she seemed to have some explanation for. Misty wasn’t having it, and divulged into a long rant about how badly she felt she had been treated by her parents. In the middle of the rant Misty suddenly felt a sharp pain across her cheek and was struck down to the floor. Misty looked up to see her mother standing over her, expressionless before walking out of the room. Misty stayed on the floor for a while but eventually got up and started packing up her things. Misty decided she was leaving that night.

After leaving home Misty started living independently. She got work as a Barista and began renting a room. Independence was strange, Misty was so used to being coddled that she found she didn’t know many of the basics of taking care of herself. After just a few months Misty fell ill. When her parents found out about this they insisted she moved home. Misty deliberated on this for a while and begrudgingly agreed.

Misty’s recovery was long, but it gave her time to think about moving forward with her life. She began applying to Universities and catching up with the education she missed when she left home.

Things were looking up for Misty, she moved out again after her recovery and worked part time while studying. All was not forgiven with her parents but their relationship was stable for the most part, with Misty still seeing them on occasion. Misty still struggled making connections to others while at University but she had a few casual friendships, something new to her. Although it had been years since she saw Marina in person, the sisters regularly talked over video calls.

The summer right after Misty graduated, she suddenly stopped hearing from her sister. No calls, no texts, nothing. Misty grew suspicious and reached out to Joey, who claimed not to have seen her in months, despite her sister telling her that they were still together just a few weeks back. Misty reached out to her parents who claimed to have not heard from her since she moved to America. It was five weeks until Misty heard news of her sister. She had been found dead, cause of death unknown.

Misty sunk down into herself. Everyone had lied to her, she begged and begged for answers but got nothing. Eventually she didn’t care. Her best friend was gone, and she didn’t even get to say goodbye. Misty didn’t know what to do with herself. She continued to work, walking around the café like a zombie. Her parents tried reaching out but she brushed them off.

Misty tried pulling herself out of this depression, but she never seemed to quite make it out completely. She decided she needed a complete change of scenery so she decided to do what her sister had done when she was roughly the same age. Move out to America, more specifically, Los Santos.
